GIMP menus

by

Hello again

this time let me talk about

“Menus”

in this image … the menus are tabbed in one window
you can control them to make each tab in a separate window
just drag them away from this window, or click the “Configure this tab” button and select “Detach tab

you also can add tabs by dragging the separated windows into the tabbed window
another way is to click the “Configure this tab” button and select “Add tab” and add any tab you want

the essential tabs that are already loaded in the program’s start are:
Layers, Channels, Undo History, Paths, FG/BG colors, Brushes, Patterns and Gradients

lets declare what are these menus used for:

1-Layers Dialog:

create a new design (go to File –> New … or press “Ctrl+N“)
this window will appear:

after pressing the “Advanced Options” you’ll find that you can change the Fill type
i like using “Transparency” … but now .. lets use “White” and click Ok

now, ofcourse there is a “Background” layer

the “Background” layer is the basic layer in any design
so it is always (or often) the last layer in the “Layers menu” order

now lets put anything in our design

ok …but let me tell you an advice:
whenever you want to add something to your design … create a new layer and put whatever you want in that layer

how to create a new layer??
watch this image:

1)the first button is to create a new layer
you’ll see this window when clicking the “new layer” button:

i’ll make this layer “Transparent” so i still can see the background layer

2)we can also Raise and Lower the layers to put them into specific order
3)we can Duplicate the layer by pressing the “Duplicate” button
4)Anchor button is used when you paste a layer … it anchors the pasted layer into the lower layer
5)Delete button is used for deleting layers

you also can lock layers by marking the small box below the Opacity controlling ratio

and you can change the Layer Mode to make it suitable for your design

2-Channels Dialog:
and it’s divided into two main parts:
1)Colors Channels:
these are like (Red, Green, Blue) channels which can’t be removed, edited or even reordered
there is also Alpha Channel that is used when your layer is Transparent
and there is Indexed Channel: for an Indexed image with a fixed number of known colors

2)Selection Masks:
all the new Channels are added to this Part, so you can edit, remove and order them as u like

3-Undo History Dialog:
this dialog saves your previous steps so you can undo or redo them again

4-Paths Dialog:
i’ve talked about this dialog in the previous post as i said:

you can use “Strock Path” icon to fill in your path with a color, brush or pattern
you also can use “Path To Selection” icon
and if you already have a selection .. you can make a Path from Selection using “Path from Selection” icon

5-FG/BG Colors Dialog:
used to select ForeGround and BackGround Colors Easily
this dialog is divided into 6 parts as follows:

6-Brushes Dialog:

used to pick any brush to work with
you can control the spacing between a brush elements, create new brush, edit, duplicate and delete brushes

7-Patterns Dialog:
used to pick patterns to work with
you can delete patterns and open them as images

8-Gradients Dialog:
used to select, edit, create, duplicate and delete Gradients so you can use them with the Blend tool

——————————————————————-

if you still don’t understand things in these menus, don’t worry, we’ll use them later and you’ll understand them well 🙂

cya next post

bye
